Artist Simone Atkins

Simone is an artist and educator living in the Upper Macleay Valley, west of Kempsey, on the banks of the Macleay River at Temagog. Surrounded by rugged natural beauty, she draws inspiration from the ever-changing moods of the river, the rhythms of farm life, and the coastal charm of Crescent Head. Her work reflects a deep connection to the land and water, capturing the essence of these environments through dynamic compositions and expressive mark-making.
Originally from Newcastle, Simone studied art at Hunter Street TAFE and the University of Newcastle. Over the past 20 years, she has worked as both a practising artist and a dedicated teacher, sharing her passion for creativity with students of all ages. Her artistic journey has been shaped by her love of traditional printmaking techniques, particularly etching, which allows her to explore intricate textures and fine details.
More recently, Simone has been experimenting with painting, expanding her practice to embrace the expressive possibilities of colour and movement. Her work is characterised by bold, free-flowing lines and vibrant hues, conveying energy and a sense of place. Whether through the delicate precision of printmaking or the fluid spontaneity of paint, she seeks to evoke the beauty and spirit of the landscapes that surround her.
Simone’s work has been exhibited in various regional galleries, and her pieces are held in private collections across Australia. She continues to explore new creative directions while staying deeply rooted in the natural world that inspires her.
